311 Day made its triumphant return back to New Orleans in 2008, with the concert celebration held at the New Orleans Arena. The event continued to grow in size and scope, with over 14,000 fans in attendance, representing all 50 states and 12 different countries.
The show featured 63 songs broken down into three sets, with numerous rarities, b-sides, and special songs played. Highlights included live debuts of “The Continuous Life” and “Seal The Deal,” a much-anticipated performance of “Today My Love” (last played in 2002), and a cover of The Steve Miller Band’s “The Joker.”
Special effects were rampant throughout the show. Lasers were introduced for the first time during “Right Now,” and were used throughout the show during a few other songs. “Applied Science” featured the elevation of Chad’s drum kit 15 feet in the air, showcasing a large Transistor-themed tapestry as he rose. Other entertainment included a performance by New Orleans’ famous Rebirth Brass Band and various costumed dancers.
311 closed the show with “Paradise” (a first in 311 concert history) after Nick stated, “Nights like this…it’s our version of ‘Paradise.’” After the song ended, the five members of 311 gathered on stage together for a group bow, and yet another amazing 311 Day came to a close.
